ALEC
BOWMAN_CLARKE

UK writer and director making independent narrative films.

His work combines procedural systems, institutional language and ordinary human behaviour, often placing people inside structures that cannot adequately describe what is happening to them.

He is currently developing his first feature, AS I LIVE & BREATHE, alongside an ongoing programme of independently produced short films.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

WHY.

I’m interested in what happens when the systems that people build to organise their lives fail. Procedures, institutions, jobs, families, rituals — all the structures we use to make things manageable.

I like ordinary places becoming strange without ceasing to be ordinary, and humour that comes from people trying to behave correctly while reality refuses to cooperate.

I make films independently because I want the writing, image, sound, design and method of production to belong to the same idea.

BIOGRAPHY

FROM SOUND
TO IMAGE.

Before moving fully into film, Alec worked for many years across portrait, landscape and live music photography, music, audio and independent production, including recording and performing work of his own. That background still shapes the way he approaches filmmaking: through rhythm, sound, performance and close attention to place.

He now writes, directs, films and edits independently, developing projects from script through production and post using a largely self-contained filmmaking pipeline.

He also designs much of the material surrounding the films — posters, identities, websites, logos and print — skills learned in order to make the whole object rather than only the film.
